Last week, the head of design at Vlug Factory, Karin Vlug, presented a new material with which the company has started to produce garments. The Vlug Factory is well-known throughout Terrestria for producing sustainable clothing with innovative techniques and renewable materials.
The Vlug Factory was founded in Arnhem many centuries ago, in 2014. In those days, clothes were still made by hand with sewing machines. The materials used for clothes changed over time, but the technology remained the same. Since its foundation, the Vlug Factory has pushed boundaries by using a new technology to create garments: it shapes fluid bio-based textiles around 3-D moulds. “We are future-driven in our working methods and always in search of new materials. But we also find it important to preserve traditional techniques such as ‘injection moulding’ for generations to come.”
Because of the rising water level there are new organisms in the water surrounding the factory. The Vlug Factory discovered that some are very suitable for the production of sustainable materials. “Scaldfish, Lesser Weever, Goby and Sunperch are species of fish we recently discovered in the water. We fished them out of the water and experimented with new production techniques.” Last Saturday, Vlug presented a newly produced three-dimensional top to a group of selected guests. “After more than a year of experimentation, we are now ready to present this garment. We dare to say that the new found fish are very suitable for clothing production.”
As the new material is made of several fishes, it has an interesting motif. Vlug is currently working on the further development of the technique and expects to take in first orders right before summer.
